2013 Wild Oyster Regatta Notice of Race

The 2013 Wild Oyster Regatta will be held on November 9-10 at the Carolina Yacht Club.  We are looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of Lightnings in Charleston again this year.

2013 Wild Oyster Regatta Notice of Race

You can see a list of the boats that have already committed on the class's Who's Coming list.

In addition to being a great event on it's own, the regatta is part of the Southeastern Lightning District circuit and the final event in the Charleston Harbor Lightning Championship.

NEW DATES for 2013 Wild Oyster Regatta

We've moved the 2013 Wild Oyster Regatta to November 9-10, 2013, with an informal afternoon on the water clinic / practice hosted by Greg Fisher on November 8 starting around 2 p.m.

We changed the dates for the regatta to avoid conflicts with the Annapolis Frigid Digit, the Championship of Champions in Columbia and the Bluenose in Tennessee.

In 2014, the regatta will likely be on the 4th weekend in October.  We'll announce the date for 2014 after consulting with the other fleets.

Thank you for your support.  We've had 37 and 39 boats the past 2 years and are looking forward to another great regatta in 2013.

Charleston Lightning Championship 2013

It's time to start gearing up for the 2013 Charleston Harbor Championship. The Championship will be based on the 5 key Lightning regattas in Charleston this year:

  • Hobcaw YC Open
  • James Island YC Open
  • Charleston YC Open
  • Carolina YC Open *
  • Wild Oyster at Carolina YC

The detailed sailing schedule for the year is list here. There will be one throwout in the Championship.

Trophies will be handed out to the top 3 boats at a fleet event after the Wild Oyster regatta.  The 2012 winners are listed here.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the trophies, please let Reggie know.  The total cost is less than $150.

* This year, the Lightning Class Atlantic Coast Championship is on the same weekend as the Carolina YC Open.  The ACCs will be held in Wrightsville, NC.  Several Charleston boats are expected to travel to Carolina YC-NC.

Trophies and Friendship

Charleston Lightning Fleet 429 had it's year-end awards ceremony today at Taco Boy over lunch.  About a dozen people attended.

Fleet Championship trophies were awarded to:

  1. Lenny Krawcheck
  2. Patrick Hogan and Nancy Hagood
  3. Mark Marenakos

The group also talked about things we could do to make 2013 even better.  The main idea was that we travel as a block, whenever possible, to about 5 out of town regattas and announce our intentions so that others in the SELD also target those regattas.  The top names that I heard were:

  1. Deep South Regatta in Savannah (and the rest of the Southern Circuit)
  2. Wilmington's June regatta
  3. Wilmington's Atlantic Coast Championships
  4. North American's in Connecticut
  5. Augusta Halloween regatta

If you want to suggest other venues, everyone is open to suggestions.

Of course, the main in town regattas will be

  1. Hobcaw
  2. James Island
  3. Charleston
  4. Carolina — this event conflicts with the ACC's in Wilmington; so we should choose which to attend in 2013
  5. Wild Oyster

It was great to see everyone.  Greg Fisher mentioned that we might be able to have a cookout at the College of Charleston some time.

2012 Fleet 429 Charleston Championship

After 5 hard fought regattas, Lenny Krawcheck and crew won a tie beaker to take the 2012 Charleston Lightning Championship.  Coming in second is Peter Hogan and Nancy Hagood.  In third is Mark Marenakos.  See the complete results online.

Trophies will be awarded when the custom engraving is completed.

The 2013 Charleston LIghtning Championship will kick off at the Hobcaw Regatta.

Menis and Hamm take Lead in Charleston Championship

By placing 4th on Saturday, Charleston Dynamic Duo Joe Menis and Ryan Hamm, with crew Kit Menis, stepped into 1st place in the 2012 Charleston Harbor Championship.  The championship is based on the 5 major Lightning races in Charleston, with one throw out.

The hunt remains close with the top 6 boats separated by just 6 points.
